Board books are books made of sturdy materials for toddlers. These books are made to withstand throwing and handle the little hands that will hold them.

I have such fond memories of reading board books to my children since they were babies and them growing up into toddlers still wanting me to read those same books to them. Books become tradition, become part of our family culture. Reading is as important as what we eat.   The vocabulary found in board books is simple: short sentences and expressive words. The pictures speak volumes.

Reading board books will also help them learn language skills such as intonation, imitation, and comprehension skills.

Here are some ideas on some things you could say in English and Spanish:

  • What do you see here? Qué ves aquî?
  • This color is ______ . Este color es __________.
  • Look here. Mira acá
  • What does he / she look like? Cómo se ve él o ella?

Start raising children bilingually from the time they are babies. Read to them from a young age so they can start learning vocabulary  and build fluency in two or more languages.

There are so many books out there but these 12 have been my children’s favorite books to read when they were toddlers. Hope you enjoy them.
